Military Hands Over 24 Rescued Schoolgirls to Governor Idris

Twenty-four students of Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School Maga, abducted by bandits last week, have regained their freedom following a coordinated military operation. The victims were formally handed over to the Governor of Kebbi State, Dr. Nasir Idris, on Tuesday night in Birnin Kebbi.

The Theatre Commander, Operation Fansan Yamma, Major General W. B. Idris, who led the handover, said the rescue operation was launched immediately after the abduction, following a directive from the Minister of State for Defence, Muhammad Bello Matawalle.

According to him, military intelligence traced the captives to Magiga Forest, which was swiftly cordoned off as troops blocked all possible escape routes used by the bandits.

“On the 19th of this month, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu directed the Minister of State for Defence, Muhammad Bello Matawalle, to relocate to Kebbi to ensure the full return of all abducted schoolgirls. I am happy to present the 24 recovered victims today. They are all here, hale and hearty — no deaths, no injuries,” Maj. Gen. Idris said.

He recommended that the girls undergo comprehensive medical examinations to ascertain their physical and psychological well-being. He also conveyed the appreciation of the Chief of Army Staff and the Chief of Defence Staff to the Kebbi State Government, the Minister of State for Defence, and sister security agencies that contributed to the success of the operation.

Receiving the students, Governor Idris expressed gratitude to God and commended President Tinubu for deploying “the full machinery of government” to ensure the safe return of the schoolgirls.

He lauded the military, security agencies, and the Minister of State for Defence for their commitment, synergy, and professionalism throughout the mission.

Governor Idris assured that all 24 students would undergo thorough medical evaluations before being reunited with their families. He also thanked Nigerians, including religious leaders and dignitaries, for their prayers, solidarity, and support during the ordeal.
