President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has pledged that his administration will continue to uphold and sustain the legacies of former President Muhammadu Buhari, describing them as rooted in discipline, integrity, purposeful leadership and the belief that public office is a trust.
The President made the commitment on Monday in Abuja at the State House Conference Centre during the unveiling and public presentation of a book titled From Soldier to Statesman – The Legacy of Muhammadu Buhari, authored by Dr Charles Omole.
Speaking at the event, President Tinubu said the book provides Nigerians with an opportunity to reflect on the life, leadership and values of the late President Buhari, noting that the greatest honour to his memory is the continuation of the ideals he stood for.
According to him, the biography presents an honest account of Buhari’s achievements and shortcomings, stressing that such truthful documentation should serve as a guide for future leaders to learn valuable lessons rather than repeat empty slogans.
President Tinubu recalled his long political association with the late President, describing him as a brother, friend and partner in the struggle that led to a historic political transition in 2015. He noted that their collaboration produced a broad-based coalition that unseated an incumbent president and reshaped Nigeria’s political landscape.
“Our journey together taught me that cooperation across differences is wisdom, not weakness,” Tinubu said, adding that Buhari understood that political competition must give way to responsible governance once the oath of office is taken.
The President also emphasised that nation-building is a collective responsibility that goes beyond political leaders, calling on Nigerians to uphold honourable politics and governance focused on results.
He commended the author, Dr Omole, for what he described as a rigorous and scholarly 600-page work that chronicles the life and times of the former President.
In his remarks, Katsina State Governor, Dikko Umaru Radda, praised President Tinubu for standing by the Buhari family and Katsina State following the former leader’s passing, describing Buhari as a symbol of discipline, patriotism and purposeful leadership.
Dr Omole explained that the book was the product of extensive research and interviews with individuals who witnessed both the early life and final moments of President Buhari, offering insights into questions surrounding his personal and public life.
Several former Service Chiefs and security heads who served under Buhari testified to his discipline, integrity and strong sense of duty. Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), retired Brigadier General Buba Marwa, described Buhari as an officer and gentleman who valued and encouraged his subordinates.
Former Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Isiaka Amao, said Buhari governed as a statesman who understood that military power must always be subordinated to democratic principles. Similarly, former Director General of the Department of State Services, Yusuf Magaji Bichi, praised Buhari’s commitment to democratic governance and credible elections.
Former Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Awwal Zubairu Gambo (Rtd), highlighted Buhari’s focus on maritime security, particularly in the Gulf of Guinea, while former Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar, said the late President championed decisive reforms anchored on professionalism and accountability within the Nigeria Police Force.
Speaking on behalf of the Buhari family, Hadiza Nana Buhari expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for his support, particularly for completing the National Armed Forces PTSD Centre in Abuja, a project initiated during Buhari’s administration. She urged Nigerians to draw lessons from her father’s life of patience and integrity.
The event was attended by the President of The Gambia, Adama Barrow; First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu; several state governors; senior government officials; traditional rulers; and members of the Buhari family.
