The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has reaffirmed the determination of the Nigeria Police Force to thwart all attempts by criminal elements to destabilise the country through violent attacks.
IGP Egbetokun gave the assurance in Birnin Kebbi on Tuesday during a sympathy visit to Governor Nasir Idris over the abduction of students of Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School, Maga.
The IGP condemned the incident as a grievous crime and an act of terror aimed at breaking the spirit of citizens and denying children their right to education.
“Your Excellency, we are deeply pained to visit Kebbi under these circumstances, following the massive pain and instability caused by the upsurge in terror attacks on vulnerable communities, which has led to the closure of schools,” he said.
He added that the police leadership fully understands the fear, pressure, and devastation experienced by communities affected by banditry.
“The loss of lives and violation of peace are unacceptable. The Police grasp the gravity of the situation. We stand with you, and we will fight this evil to restore peace. We will not allow criminal elements to succeed in their cruel agenda,” Egbetokun declared.
The IGP disclosed that the force had deployed additional tactical assets to Kebbi State, strengthened intelligence operations, and enhanced collaboration with other security agencies as well as community-based security networks.
“Kebbi is important to Nigeria. Without peace in Kebbi, there will be no peace in the country. If we have peace in Kebbi, we will have peace in Sokoto and neighbouring states, and Nigeria will be safe. This is our commitment,” he said.
Governor Nasir Idris, visibly pleased with the IGP’s visit, praised Egbetokun for prioritising the security needs of Kebbi State.
“We thank Mr. Kayode Egbetokun for giving prominence to Kebbi. You deployed armoured vehicles as requested and responded swiftly to my correspondence seeking intervention. The IGP is a listening leader, performing excellently,” the governor stated.
Governor Nasir Idris also commended the state Commissioner of Police for his responsiveness and assured the Police Force of continued government support.
“Kebbi State Government will sustain its support to police personnel to enable them remain alive to their responsibilities. We shall consolidate our partnership with the Police,” the governor pledged.
