Luminate Group has commended the Centre for Journalism Innovation and Development (CJID) for its efforts in artificial intelligence, digital innovation and technology accountability.
The group’s Chief Executive Officer, Melanie Hui, gave the commendation during a visit to CJID’s office in Abuja, reaffirming partnership in promoting responsible technology and strengthening Nigeria’s digital ecosystem.
CJID Chief Executive Officer, Dapo Olorunyomi, called for greater accountability from technology companies, citing a trader in Ilorin who reportedly lost 150,000 naira to a fraudulent TikTok advertisement.
He said CJID’s investigations had exposed online fraud, abusive digital lending and harmful social media content, while its fellowship programme trained 35 fellows and commissioned 18 investigations.
Mr Olorunyomi also highlighted CJID’s AI initiatives, including audio verification tools, a WhatsApp fact-checking chatbot and the Nigeria AI Collective, which tackles misinformation and promotes responsible AI governance.
Ms Hui pledged continued support, urging African countries to strengthen their influence over digital technologies and ensure greater transparency and accountability in the sector.
