Former Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Ibrahim Tanko Muhammad (retd.), has passed away at the age of 71.
His death was confirmed on Tuesday by Mukhtar Gidado, Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to Bauchi State Governor, Senator Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed. According to the statement, the former CJN died in a hospital in Saudi Arabia after a prolonged illness.
Governor Bala Mohammed, on behalf of his family, the Bauchi State Government and the people of the state, expressed deep sorrow over the loss, describing Justice Tanko Muhammad as a distinguished jurist and an illustrious son of Bauchi State.
He noted that the late justice had an exemplary career in the judiciary, rising through the ranks with diligence and distinction. Justice Tanko Muhammad served as a Judge of the High Court, Justice of the Court of Appeal, Justice of the Supreme Court, and later as the Chief Justice of Nigeria from 2019 to 2022.
The governor said the former CJN was widely respected for his legal acumen, discipline, integrity and unwavering commitment to the rule of law, adding that his conferment with the national honour of Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON) reflected his immense contributions to Nigeria’s judicial system.
Governor Mohammed extended condolences to the family of the deceased, members of the legal profession, and Nigerians at large, describing the death as a significant loss to Bauchi State, the Nigerian judiciary and the nation.
He also prayed for Almighty Allah to grant the departed soul Aljannatul Firdaus and to comfort all those mourning his passing.
