Female Councillors under the auspices of the Female Councillors Forum in Kebbi State, led by Kungiyar Tallafin Mata Development Initiative, have held an advocacy visit to the Kebbi State House of Assembly Committee on Women Affairs and Social Development.
The visit was aimed at soliciting legislative support for increased female representation in both elective and appointed leadership positions across the state.
Leading the delegation, Hajiya Kulu Muhammad, appealed to the lawmakers to support policies that will promote women’s inclusion in governance.
She stressed that out of the 21 Local Government Councils in Kebbi State, women should be fairly represented with at least five Chairpersons and six Vice Chairpersons.
The group also advocated for the representation of four women in the Kebbi State House of Assembly, noting that women are currently underrepresented in the legislature.
On executive appointments, the delegation expressed concern that only two women are among the 26 Commissioners in the state.
They therefore called for a minimum of 35 percent representation for women in all leadership appointments in Kebbi State.
The forum further advocated for the creation of reserved special seats for women in both elective and appointed positions as a deliberate policy to bridge the gender gap in governance.
Responding, the Chairman of the House Committee on Women Affairs and Social Development and member representing Argungu Constituency, Honourable Muhammad Naamore, assured the delegation that their letter would be forwarded to the House for consideration.
Honourable Naamore emphasized that the Kebbi State House of Assembly has always given women-related matters the utmost attention and reaffirmed the Assembly’s commitment to promoting women’s participation in governance.
