The Federal Government has flagged off the distribution of Presidential Emergency Food and Nutrition items in Kebbi State, as part of efforts to tackle hunger and improve the welfare of vulnerable citizens.
The flag-off ceremony, held in Birnin Kebbi, was performed by the Minister of State for Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Dr. Yusuf Tanko Sununu.
Dr. Yusuf Sununu said the initiative was a proactive intervention of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, aimed at addressing the growing challenges of food insecurity and malnutrition across the country.
He disclosed that projections indicate about 35 million Nigerians may face hunger, prompting the President to direct the ministry to commence the distribution of relief items in a dignified and transparent manner.
According to him, the Birnin Kebbi exercise covers beneficiaries from Kebbi Central Senatorial District, while similar distributions will soon be carried out in Kebbi North and Kebbi South.
The Minister also revealed that he visited Sir Yahaya Memorial Hospital, Birnin Kebbi where he distributed essential supplies for the treatment of children suffering from severe acute malnutrition, noting that similar interventions would be extended to other senatorial districts.
He explained that the programme is designed to cushion the effects of flooding, which has resulted in the loss of farm produce and livelihoods for many families.
Dr. Sununu listed the distributed items to include food and nutrition commodities such as rice, beans, millet, cooking oil, fortified foods, seasoning salt and tomato paste, among others.
He stressed that the intervention is not only meant to combat hunger but also to improve nutrition and reduce the vulnerability of poor households.
The Minister commended President Tinubu for his leadership and for ensuring that Kebbi State benefits from federal interventions, while also praising Governor Nasir Idris for his cooperation with the Federal Government.
In his remarks, Governor Nasir Idris expressed appreciation to President Tinubu for extending the programme to Kebbi State, saying it would significantly improve the living conditions of many residents.
He reaffirmed the state’s continued support for the President in his efforts to deliver good governance to Nigerians.
Some beneficiaries, including Umar Abubakar Takalau and Hadiza Sani, expressed gratitude for the assistance and prayed for the success of President Tinubu and Governor Idris.
Items distributed included 25kg bags of rice, beans and millet, as well as 10 litres of groundnut oil and 5 litres of palm oil, among other relief materials.
