The Kebbi State Government has strongly dismissed allegations made by former Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN), accusing Governor Nasir Idris of importing political thugs, foreign mercenaries, and engaging in clandestine arms trafficking.
In a statement signed by the governor’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Yahaya Sarki, the government described Malami’s claims as “false, malicious and a calculated attempt to smear the hard-earned reputation” of Governor Idris.
The statement expressed disappointment that Malami, a senior lawyer and leader of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Kebbi State, would make “grievous allegations without presenting a shred of evidence.”
“If Malami indeed possesses the credible intelligence he claims, let him present it openly before the Nigerian people and relevant security agencies,” the statement read.
According to the government, since assuming office, Governor Idris has demonstrated strong commitment to tackling insecurity, citing his provision of vehicles, motorcycles, communication gadgets and operational allowances to security agencies. The governor was also said to have facilitated the deployment of armoured vehicles, reinforced collaboration with security forces, and secured aerial support from the Nigerian Air Force in the fight against bandits, particularly the Lakurawa terror network.
“These efforts have yielded tangible results, restoring calm and peace to many troubled communities, especially in Zuru Emirate,” the statement added.
The government further described Malami’s allegations as “reckless” and “an insult to the intelligence of the security agencies working day and night to protect lives and property.” It also said it welcomed any independent investigation into the claims but insisted Malami must provide verifiable evidence.
The statement also accused the former minister of recently leading a convoy of political thugs into the state “under the guise of a condolence visit,” alleging that his supporters unleashed violence on APC members and destroyed property in Birnin Kebbi.
“Governor Nasir Idris remains a law-abiding leader with an unblemished record of service, integrity and dedication to the welfare of his people,” the statement stressed, assuring that the administration would continue to uphold peace, security and progress in Kebbi State.
