The Kebbi State Police Command has arrested a 20-year-old woman, Maryam Atiku, for allegedly attempting to kill her newborn baby girl by burying her alive in Dandi Local Government Area of the state.
According to a statement signed by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, CSP Nafiu Abubakar, the incident occurred on June 25, 2025, when Maryam, a resident of Nasarawa area in Kamba, delivered a baby girl and attempted to end her life.
The police said the young mother tied the infant’s neck with three pieces of wrappers, covered her mouth, and took her to Malam Yaro bush, where she dug a shallow grave and buried the baby alive.
However, luck smiled on the child the following day when a farmer, Alhaji Kabiru Muhammad, discovered the disturbed soil on his farmland. Suspicious of the sight, he alerted villagers, who assisted in exhuming the baby alive. The child was rushed to the General Hospital in Kamba, where doctors confirmed her condition as stable.
Following the report, detectives from the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Birnin Kebbi, arrested Maryam, who confessed to committing the crime during preliminary interrogation.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Bello M. Sani, condemned the act, stressing the Command’s zero tolerance for child abuse, exploitation, and all forms of gender-based violence. He urged parents and guardians to protect the rights of children and avoid compromising their future due to poverty or other challenges.
The CP also commended the wife of the Kebbi State Governor, Hajiya Zainab Nasare Nasir Idris (Kauran Gwandu), for her intervention in providing support for the rescued baby and her custodian, Alhaji Kabiru Muhammad.
Police confirmed that the suspect has been charged to court after investigation, with the aim of ensuring justice and deterring similar crimes.
