The Speaker of the Kebbi State House of Assembly has assured workers and citizens that the proposed amendment to the Contributory Pension Law will not undermine their collective interests.
In a statement reacting to concerns raised by a citizen on social media, the Speaker explained that the bill under review is not new but an amendment to the State and Local Government Contributory Pension Law of 2008.
He noted that the legislative process has already advanced to the public hearing stage, with invitations extended to key stakeholders including the Nigeria Labour Congress, the Trade Union Congress, NULGE, health workers, and the Contributory Pension Board.
The Speaker encouraged individuals and associations to present written memoranda or attend the hearings, stressing that the Assembly remains open to constructive engagement.
Highlighting previous people-oriented laws passed under his leadership, such as the extension of teachers’ retirement age, the establishment of the Senior Citizens’ Centre, the Disability Commission, and the Violence Against Persons Prohibition Law, the Speaker reaffirmed the legislature’s commitment to the welfare of citizens.
He urged members of the public to obtain copies of both the 2008 law and the amendment bill in order to better understand its provisions, assuring that no section would be introduced to prejudice workers’ rights.
