The Kebbi State House of Assembly has commenced public hearing on the Kebbi State Child Protection Amendment Bill 2025.
The public hearing, organized by the House Committee on Justice and Judiciary, brought together a wide range of stakeholders, including lawmakers, child advocacy groups, legal experts, religious leaders, civil society organizations, and concerned citizens all gathered to contribute ideas toward improving child protection in the state.
Declaring the session open, Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Mohammed Usman Zuru, said the hearing was in line with the Assembly’s commitment to ensuring that laws reflect the will and realities of the people.
He noted that since the passage of the Child’s Right Law in 2021, several concerns and calls for review had emerged, prompting the Assembly to revisit the legislation to better align it with the state’s social, cultural, and religious values, while upholding the rights and dignity of every child.
The Speaker urged participants to be open and constructive in their submissions, stressing that the House remains committed to transparency, inclusiveness, and fairness in all its legislative processes.
Also speaking, the Chairman of the House Committee on Justice and Judiciary, Barrister Faruku Abubakar Maisudan, described child protection as a collective responsibility.
He assured that the committee would work closely with all stakeholders to create a stronger and more effective legal framework that safeguards children’s health, education, and general wellbeing.
Several child rights advocates at the event commended the initiative, noting the urgent need to address rising cases of abuse and neglect, and to ensure children are given the protection and support they deserve.
