Malami Alleges Orchestrated Attack on Convoy in Birnin Kebbi

Former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN), has alleged that his convoy was violently attacked by political thugs near his private residence in Birnin Kebbi on Monday.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, Malami described the incident as a “sad day” that marked “a negative turn in the political developments of Kebbi State.” He explained that the attack occurred as he returned from condolence visits to the Emir of Gwandu and the family of the late Imam Tukur Kola.

According to him, the thugs, allegedly emerging from the All Progressives Congress (APC) state headquarters located close to his residence, hurled stones and other dangerous objects at his convoy. Several vehicles were reportedly damaged, while some members of his entourage sustained serious injuries, including fractures.

Malami insisted that the incident was not an isolated case of hooliganism, but rather a politically orchestrated assault allegedly sponsored by “powerful figures who have abandoned governance at the altar of do-or-die politics.” He further alleged that APC stalwarts and close associates of the state governor were present during the attack, while security personnel on ground failed to intervene.

“The thugs moved into the party headquarters for apparent cover and no arrest was eventually made. There was deliberate inaction,” he stated.

The former minister emphasized that the issue transcends personal attacks against him, stressing that it reflects a dangerous trend where “thuggery replaces dialogue and intimidation replaces governance.”

He reminded the Kebbi State Government that the people’s judgment, history, and the consequences of poor leadership would outlive intimidation tactics, adding that with over 133 million Nigerians living in multidimensional poverty according to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), leaders must focus on governance rather than violence.

“Kebbi State Government should not fear Malami. They should fear the consequences of their own actions, the judgment of history, and the anger of the people who have been left in abject poverty, insecurity, and despair,” he declared.

Malami called on security agencies to live up to their constitutional responsibilities of safeguarding lives and property, warning that politics must never be reduced to violence.

“The people of Kebbi State are entitled to their constitutional rights of freedom of movement, speech, and association. Their resources must be deployed in protecting their lives and property, not otherwise,” he added.
