NEMA Warns Kebbi Residents Over Imminent Floods, Severe Dry Spell Risks

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), has issued a flood warning and safety advisory to residents of Kebbi State following predictions contained in the 2026 Seasonal Climate Prediction and Annual Flood Outlook.

In a press release signed by the Head of NEMA Sokoto Operations Office, Tukur Abubakar, the agency said Kebbi State is expected to witness increased rainfall during the 2026 rainy season compared to last year.

The agency explained that the anticipated heavy and high-intensity rainfall may trigger flash floods in several parts of the state, especially in riverine and low-lying communities around Birnin Kebbi, Argungu, Yauri, Jega, Koko/Besse and Bunza local government areas.

NEMA also disclosed that Kebbi State has been classified among the high flood-risk states in the country for 2026, with flooding expected to affect communities under high, medium and low-risk categories.

According to the forecast, the months of July, August and September are projected to be the most critical period, as the Kebbi River may overflow its banks, leading to the inundation of farmlands, riverside communities and critical infrastructure.

The agency further warned that about ninety-seven road sections across the state are at risk of flooding, noting that roads linking towns such as Yauri, Kamba, Zuru and Bagudo may be affected if preventive measures are not taken.

Apart from the flood threat, NEMA predicted that Kebbi State may also experience a severe dry spell lasting about twenty-one days between June and August this year, a development expected to affect agricultural activities and crop productivity in some local government areas.

NEMA therefore urged residents to clear drainages, avoid indiscriminate dumping of refuse, relocate from flood-prone areas and adhere strictly to safety advisories, while reaffirming its commitment to working with stakeholders to reduce disaster risks and protect lives and property during the rainy season.
