The Presidency has dismissed claims by former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu plans to remain in power indefinitely.
In a statement issued by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, described El-Rufai’s comments as baseless and unfounded.
El-Rufai had alleged that President Tinubu intends to become a “life president” after the 2027 elections.
But the Presidency insisted that the President is a democrat with no intention of remaining in office beyond May 28, 2031, when his second term would end if re-elected.
The statement further noted that El-Rufai appeared unsettled by the massive support President Tinubu continues to enjoy, particularly in the North, pointing to the grand reception he received during a recent visit to Kaduna.
The presidency further noted that El-Rufai’s claims were an attempt to downplay the President’s popularity after failing in his bid to stop Tinubu’s likely re-election in 2027.
