President Tinubu Calls for Community-Based Security Committees to Strengthen Peace Nationwide

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has called for the establishment of community-based security committees across Nigeria to enhance peace, stability, and collaboration between citizens and security agencies.

Speaking on Tuesday in Birnin Kebbi at the Northern Traditional Rulers Council (NTRC) General Assembly, the President—represented by his Chief of Staff, Mr. Femi Gbajabiamila—said the initiative would promote dialogue, conflict resolution, and closer cooperation among communities, traditional rulers, and security institutions.

With the theme “Strengthening Community Collaboration for Lasting Peace in Northern Nigeria,” President Tinubu emphasized that the committees would also foster interfaith understanding, build trust among religious groups, and reduce communal tensions across the country.

He further underscored the need to empower women and youth through education, economic opportunities, and leadership training as a strategic approach to preventing violent extremism. The President added that community participation in decision-making processes remains key to building trust and sustaining peace.

President Tinubu commended Kebbi State Governor, Dr. Nasir Idris, for his administration’s peace-building initiatives and assured him of the Federal Government’s continued support in sustaining stability across the state and the region.

In his remarks, the Sultan of Sokoto and Chairman of the Northern Traditional Rulers Council, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, called for the regulation of social media to curb the spread of false and misleading information capable of undermining national security.

He praised the Nigerian Armed Forces for their sacrifices in preserving peace and unity and urged citizens to support security agencies while refraining from making demoralizing comments online. The Sultan noted that insecurity remains a global challenge requiring collective effort and understanding.

Also speaking, the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, thanked Nigerians for their support and reaffirmed the military’s commitment to restoring peace nationwide. He revealed that the Defence Headquarters had directed troops to take down insurgents without waiting for approval from Abuja, stressing the Armed Forces’ loyalty to constitutional authority.

The Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Senator Atiku Bagudu, emphasized the importance of national unity and public support for the military, urging Nigerians to appreciate the sacrifices made by security personnel in safeguarding lives and property.

In his address, Governor Nasir Idris expressed appreciation to the NTRC for choosing Kebbi as the host of the Assembly, describing the theme as both timely and relevant. He reaffirmed his administration’s unwavering support for traditional institutions, which he described as vital partners in promoting peace and unity.

Governor Idris disclosed that his government had provided new jeeps for all traditional rulers, renovated and furnished palaces, and procured over 90 vehicles for security agencies as part of efforts to enhance peace and security operations in the state. He added that traditional rulers are regularly involved in governance and decision-making at the state level.

Representatives of the Inspector-General of Police and the Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS) also acknowledged the critical role of traditional institutions in achieving lasting national peace and security.
