President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the reappointment of Brigadier-General Mohammed Buba Marwa (Rtd.) as Chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, for another term of five years.

A statement by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, indicates that General Marwa, who was first appointed in January 2021, will now continue to lead the nation’s anti-narcotics agency until 2031.

The Adamawa-born retired military officer had earlier served as Chairman of the Presidential Advisory Committee for the Elimination of Drug Abuse from 2018 to 2020, where he led a series of reforms that laid the foundation for ongoing national efforts against drug trafficking and abuse.

General Marwa, a former military governor of Lagos and Borno States, is an accomplished officer and administrator. He was commissioned as a second lieutenant in 1973 and held several key military and diplomatic positions, including Brigade Major of the 23 Armoured Brigade, Aide-de-Camp to former Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant-General Theophilus Danjuma, and Deputy Defence Adviser at the Nigerian Embassy in Washington, D.C. He later served as Defence Adviser to the Nigerian Permanent Mission to the United Nations.

He holds two postgraduate degrees: a Master of Public and International Affairs from the University of Pittsburgh and a Master of Public Administration from Harvard University.

Under his leadership, the NDLEA has recorded significant achievements, including the arrest of about 73,000 drug traffickers and barons, and the seizure of over 15 million kilogrammes of various hard drugs across the country. The agency has also intensified nationwide campaigns aimed at curbing drug abuse, particularly among young people.

President Tinubu described his reappointment as a clear vote of confidence in his exemplary service, urging him to remain steadfast in the fight against drug trafficking and the destruction it poses to society.

General Marwa’s renewed tenure is expected to consolidate ongoing reforms and sustain the momentum in Nigeria’s anti-drug war.
