Tinubu Accepts Egbetokun’s Resignation, Appoints Tunji Disu as Acting IGP

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has accepted the resignation of the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, and appointed Assistant Inspector-General of Police Tunji Disu as Acting Inspector-General of Police.

The development was announced in a statement issued on Tuesday by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.

According to the statement, Egbetokun submitted his resignation letter to the President, citing pressing family considerations. President Tinubu expressed profound appreciation for Egbetokun’s decades of distinguished service to the nation and the Nigeria Police Force, commending his dedication, professionalism, and commitment to strengthening the country’s internal security architecture during his tenure.

Egbetokun, who was appointed in June 2023, was serving a four-year term expected to end in June 2027 in line with the amended provisions of the Police Act.

In view of the prevailing security challenges in the country, the President approved the appointment of AIG Disu to serve in an acting capacity with immediate effect, in accordance with extant laws and legal guidance.

President Tinubu said he is confident that Disu’s experience, operational expertise, and leadership capacity will provide steady and focused direction for the Nigeria Police Force at this critical period.

The statement added that, in compliance with the Police Act 2020, the President will soon convene a meeting of the Nigeria Police Council to formally consider Disu’s appointment as substantive Inspector-General of Police. His name will thereafter be transmitted to the Senate for confirmation.

The President reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to enhancing national security, strengthening institutional capacity, and ensuring that the Nigeria Police Force remains professional, accountable, and fully equipped to carry out its constitutional responsibilities.
