Former President Goodluck Jonathan has urged Africans to hold their leaders accountable by voting out those who fail to deliver on their mandates

Speaking at the 2025 Goodluck Jonathan Foundation Democracy Dialogue in Ghana, Mr Jonathan warned that electoral manipulation remains the gravest threat to democracy on the continent.

He said Africa’s democracy risks collapse unless stakeholders unite to reform the system.

According to him, credible elections are the only way to ensure that underperforming leaders are removed at the polls, but manipulation has allowed some to cling to power against the will of the people.

Mr Jonathan identified citizens’ expectations as freedom, fair representation, inclusivity, security, healthcare, education, jobs, and dignity, stressing that failure to meet these needs fuels disillusionment and authoritarian tendencies.

Also speaking at the event, Ghana’s President, John Mahama, joined other leaders, including former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo, in calling for a reset of democratic practices in Africa.
