Governor Nasir Idris of Kebbi State has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to the sustained growth and development of Abdullahi Fodio University of Science and Technology, Aliero (AFUSTA), and the education sector as a whole.
The governor stated this while addressing guests at the maiden convocation ceremony of the university for the 2010/2011 and 2023/2024 academic sessions, held at the AFUSTA convocation ground in Aliero.
Governor Idris said his administration, since inception, has consistently invested in expanding access to education, improving infrastructure, strengthening institutions, and supporting both students and educators across the state.
He disclosed that the state government released N119 million for the conduct of the combined convocation, in addition to facilitating the appointment of a Chancellor and the constitution of the university’s Governing Council—statutory requirements for the holding of a convocation ceremony.
According to him, the Kauran Gwandu administration has also ensured regular financial support to the institution to guarantee its smooth operation. He noted that these achievements reflect his administration’s unwavering resolve to transform AFUSTA into a centre of excellence capable of competing favourably with peer institutions across the country.
The governor congratulated the graduating students and urged them to uphold the values of integrity, hard work and service to humanity, while applying the knowledge and skills acquired to contribute meaningfully to national development.
In his remarks, the Chancellor of the university and Emir of Yauri, Dr. Muhammad Zayyanu Abdullahi, expressed appreciation to Governor Idris for appointing him as the pioneer Chancellor of AFUSTA. He pledged to discharge his responsibilities with dedication and commitment.
Dr. Abdullahi, who described education as the foundation of sustainable development in any society, called on stakeholders to critically examine and address the challenges confronting Nigeria’s educational system.
Earlier, the Vice Chancellor of the university, Professor DanShehu Bagudu Gwadangaji, announced that a total of 7,221 graduands drawn from 13 academic sessions were awarded bachelor’s degrees, diplomas and certificates.
Highlights of the ceremony included the conferment of Dr. Muhammad Zayyanu Abdullahi, the Emir of Yauri, as Chancellor of the university, as well as the award of honorary doctorate degrees to Governor Nasir Idris of Kebbi State; Governor Ahmed Aliyu of Sokoto State; Governor Dauda Lawal of Zamfara State; Governor Hope Uzodinma of Imo State; and the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar III.
