Kebbi State Governor, Dr Nasir Idris, has restated his administration’s unwavering commitment to the welfare of members of the Armed Forces, veterans, and the families of fallen heroes.
The Governor gave the assurance during the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day ceremony held at the Haliru Abdu Stadium, Birnin Kebbi.
Describing the occasion as a solemn moment of reflection, Governor Idris said the day was set aside to honour the brave men and women who paid the supreme sacrifice so that Nigerians could live in peace, freedom and dignity.
He noted that across generations, the Armed Forces have stood as a shield for the nation, defending Nigeria both in times of war and peace, while answering the call of duty with courage and discipline.
“Many return home bearing the scars of service, while many others did not return at all. Their sacrifice reminds us that the freedom we enjoy today is not free; it was secured by courage and loyalty, sanctified by sacrifice,” the Governor said.
Governor Idris stressed that the loss suffered by families of fallen heroes is immeasurable, adding that their pain is shared by the entire nation. He emphasized that the fallen heroes did not die in vain, noting that their names remain etched in the hearts and conscience of Kebbi State and Nigeria as a whole.
Highlighting his administration’s efforts to support widows of fallen heroes, the Governor said financial assistance has been consistently provided to ease their burden, pledging to sustain the gesture. He also assured veterans of the government’s continued determination to support them at all times.
Commending serving officers and personnel, Governor Idris praised their bravery and professionalism, assuring them that the nation stands firmly with them. He called on Nigerians to collectively build a society anchored on peace, justice and mutual respect, so that the sacrifices of the fallen heroes would continue to yield the fruits of a stronger and more united nation.
Earlier, the Coordinator, Military Widows Association Kebbi state, Hajiya Asmau Umar Kanoma expressed gratitude to the Governor, describing him as a pillar of support whose interventions have made a significant difference in their lives.
She appealed to the state government to provide job opportunities and skills acquisition programmes to enable widows to become self-reliant.
Highlights of the event included the laying of wreaths by Governor Nasir Idris, a representative of the Emir of Gwandu, and heads of security agencies, special prayers for the fallen heroes, a gun salute, and the release of pigeons as a symbol of peace.
The Governor, through the Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Yakubu Bala Tafida announced donations of ₦10 million each to serving personnel, veterans, and widows of fallen heroes, as part of activities marking the remembrance ceremony.
