Governor Nasir Idris of Kebbi State has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to improving animal health and safeguarding the livelihoods of pastoralists and farmers across the state.
He made the pledge during a sensitisation campaign on the dangers of drug abuse and illicit substances organised for Fulani communities in Birnin Kebbi.
Represented by the Commissioner for Animal Health, Husbandry and Fisheries, Kabiru Usman Alaramma, the Governor said his administration has intensified efforts to boost livestock development in the state. He disclosed that the government has awarded a contract for the completion of an ultra-modern veterinary clinic in Birnin Kebbi, which is now at an advanced stage.
Governor Idris also revealed that veterinary students in the state have been granted automatic employment even before completing their studies. In addition, he said a special committee has been constituted to address the recurring farmers-herders clashes with a view to finding lasting solutions.
He further appealed to herders to take advantage of the ongoing free cattle vaccination exercise being conducted across Fulani communities, stressing that the initiative is aimed at improving livestock health and productivity.
In his remarks, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Fulani Herders and Livestock Farmers, Muhammad Kiruwa Zuru, said the sensitisation campaign was designed to curb the growing menace of drug abuse among Fulani youths. According to him, the consumption of illicit substances often leads to criminal behaviour and social unrest.
Kiruwa, who also holds the traditional title of Ardon Zuru, urged the Fulani communities to participate in the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise by obtaining their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs).
Other speakers at the event included the representative of the Emir of Gwandu, the Chairman of Birnin Kebbi Local Government Council, and the Deputy Commandant of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Kebbi State Command. They all emphasized the grave dangers of drug abuse and called for collective efforts to eliminate the scourge.
Highlights of the event featured the distribution of clothing materials and hijabs donated by Governor Idris and his wife, Hajiya Zainab Nasare Nasir Idris, as well as a cash donation of ₦1 million to Fulani youths by the Governor.
