Kebbi State Governor, Dr. Nasir Idris, has reaffirmed his administration’s determination to confront insecurity and improve the welfare of workers across the state.
The governor stated this during the celebration of the 2026 International Workers’ Day held at the Haliru Abdu Stadium in Birnin Kebbi.
Governor Idris acknowledged that insecurity, ranging from banditry to kidnapping, continues to affect parts of the state despite sustained efforts by his administration to support security agencies with operational vehicles and other logistics.
He, however, assured residents that the government remains fully committed to addressing the security challenges head-on.
The governor described workers as the backbone of every economy and disclosed that plans were underway to further enhance workers’ welfare in the state.
He also commended labour leaders and advocates who fought to ensure that workers have a voice in shaping policies and national development.
According to him, organised labour remains a critical partner in the formulation and implementation of policies and projects aimed at advancing the state’s development agenda.
Governor Idris noted that the theme of this year’s Workers’ Day celebration, “Insecurity and Poverty: Bane of Decent Work,” was timely and appropriate, pledging his administration’s commitment to inclusive and workers-centred governance.
Earlier, the Kebbi State Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Comrade Murtala Usman, said Workers’ Day provides an opportunity to recognise the contributions of workers to national development and reflect on the challenges confronting them.
He said the theme highlighted two major issues threatening decent work and sustainable development in the country.
While acknowledging the efforts of both the Federal and Kebbi State Governments in tackling insecurity, the NLC chairman called on all critical stakeholders to intensify efforts toward protecting lives and property.
Comrade Murtala Usman also commended the Kebbi State Government for creating a conducive working environment and maintaining a worker-friendly administration.
Highlights of the event included a march-past by various workers’ unions and the presentation of awards of excellence to Governor Nasir Idris, Secretary to the State Government Yakubu Bala Tafida, former Head of Service Sufyanu Garba Bena, TUC Chairman Abdullahi Shehu, and NLC Chairman Murtala Usman.
