House of Reps Plans to Assign Formal Roles to Traditional Rulers Alhassan Ado Doguwa

The Majority Leader of Nigeria’s House of Representatives, has announced that the legislature is working on assigning constitutional roles to traditional rulers as part of the ongoing review of the 1999 Constitution.

Speaking during the 2025 International Hausa Day celebration held in Daura, Doguwa stated that a proposal to give traditional rulers official responsibilities has already been submitted to the constitution amendment committee.

Doguwa, who also holds the traditional title Sardaunan Kasar Hausa Mai Tuta, emphasized the historical importance of traditional leaders, saying, “Before the colonial era, traditional institutions played key roles in maintaining peace, security, and governance at the grassroots level. It’s only right that we formally recognize their place in the constitution.”

He praised the organizers of the International Hausa Day event, noting that such initiatives help promote unity among Hausa-speaking communities globally. The celebration took place at the Emir of Daura’s palace, marking Daura’s symbolic status as the ancestral home of the Hausa people.
