Kano Governor to unveil ₦1 Trillion 2026 Budget

by Imran Musa

Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, says his administration is in the final stages of preparing the state’s first-ever ₦1 trillion proposed budget for the 2026 fiscal year.

The disclosure was made in a statement issued on Friday by the governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa.

Governor Yusuf announced the development while declaring open the Second Special Executive Council Meeting, convened to review and harmonize the 2026 budget proposals ahead of its formal presentation to the Kano State House of Assembly next week.

According to him, the unprecedented budget size underscores his government’s resolve to strengthen the ongoing infrastructure drive, advance urban renewal efforts, and accelerate socio-economic development across the state.

He noted that the expansion of the budget was made possible by improved internally generated revenue (IGR) and the plugging of financial leakages within government operations.

“Our administration has enhanced internal revenue systems and effectively sealed leakages, giving us the confidence to plan big and invest in transformative projects for 2026,” Governor Yusuf said.

He further highlighted that the 2026 budget will prioritize housing, agriculture, education, healthcare, as well as support for small and medium-scale enterprises—initiatives aimed at boosting economic growth and creating sustainable livelihoods for residents.

Upon completion, the proposed budget—exceeding one trillion naira—will be forwarded to the Kano State House of Assembly for consideration and approval.

Governor Yusuf reiterated his administration’s commitment to transparency, fiscal discipline, and equitable sectoral allocation to ensure quality service delivery to the people of Kano State.

If presented as expected, this will be the largest budget proposal ever submitted by any northern state in Nigeria.
