Kano Police Arrest Suspected Car Thief, Recover Two Vehicles

The Kano State Police Command says it has recorded a major breakthrough in its fight against vehicle-related crimes with the arrest of a suspected car thief and the recovery of two vehicles linked to criminal activities.

In a statement issued by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, the arrest was made in line with the directive of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, to intensify visibility patrols and intelligence-led operations across the country.

According to the police, the first case occurred on August 28, 2025, when a female resident of Sharada Quarters reported that she had entrusted her Mercedes-Benz (registration number BWR-442 Abuja) to a mechanic, identified as 42-year-old Abubakar Yakubu, for repairs.

Instead of fixing the vehicle, Yakubu allegedly fled with it. Investigations revealed that the suspect took the vehicle to Kaduna State, where he sold and swapped it for a Toyota Corolla, after adding ₦7 million to complete the deal.

Acting on the directive of the Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, tactical teams trailed and arrested Yakubu. The Toyota Corolla obtained from the transaction has been recovered, while efforts are ongoing to track and recover the Mercedes-Benz.

 

In another case reported on August 25, 2025, a 48-year-old man from Mariri Quarters was allegedly defrauded during a car purchase. He told police that he had been contacted by one Ibrahim Garba, said to be from Kaduna, who offered to sell him a Toyota Corolla for ₦2.2 million.

After paying in full, the buyer was taking the vehicle on a test drive when a mob accosted him, shouting “thief.” The police have since impounded the vehicle as investigations continue to determine its ownership status and unravel the suspected fraud.

 

Commissioner of Police Bakori reassured Kano residents that the Command remains resolute in protecting lives and property and will ensure that criminals face the full weight of the law.

He also commended the public for their cooperation, urging residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities to security agencies.
