Kebbi NGOs, CBOs Undergo Capacity Building Workshop in Birnin Kebbi

The Kebbi State chapter of the Coalition of Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs), in partnership with the Office of the Special Adviser to the Governor on Donor Agencies, has organised a one-day capacity-building workshop for Community-Based Organisations (CBOs), Community Development Associations (CDAs), and local NGOs in Birnin Kebbi Local Government Area.

Speaking at the event, the coalition’s Vice Chairperson, Maryam Abubakar Kaoje, said the workshop aimed to address challenges hindering the smooth operation of NGOs in the state. She explained that the training was designed to help organisations obtain proper documentation required by partners, identify gaps in leadership, finance, and human resources, as well as promote collaboration among CBOs, CDAs, and NGOs.

Maryam Kaoje stressed the importance of accountability and transparency, especially in financial dealings, and underscored the need for proper record-keeping. She expressed concern over what she described as the nonchalant attitude of some NGOs in Kebbi, which has given room for organisations from other states to dominate. However, she expressed optimism that the workshop would equip local organisations with the tools and knowledge needed to thrive.

One of the resource persons, Peter Maliki, said the exercise was also aimed at creating a database of NGOs in the state, improving their operational capacity, and guiding them on how to secure funding from donor agencies. He noted that maintaining a credible track record was critical for accessing grants.

Another facilitator, Francis Ekebaye, highlighted the importance of transparency in decision-making, leadership accountability, adherence to constitutions and binding documents, as well as effective planning and regular meetings. He added that organisations must have clear missions, monitor their activities, and keep evidence of program impacts through proper documentation.

In his remarks, the Director of Community Development at the Ministry for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Zaki Madidi, noted that community development remains a key priority of the government. He said the workshop was a unique platform to strengthen local institutions, build resilience, and enhance accountability in grassroots service delivery.

Some participants who spoke with journalists commended the organisers for the initiative and pledged to apply the lessons learnt to improve their operations.

The workshop, themed “Strengthening Effective Community Development”, brought together about 30 CBOs, CDAs, and NGOs from Birnin Kebbi Local Government Area.
