The Kebbi State Government says it is considering a legislation that will require shops along Ahmadu Bello Way in Birnin Kebbi to be converted into upstairs structures as part of efforts to modernise the state capital.
The Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Alhaji Hayatu Bawa, disclosed this during the resumed Ministerial Briefing organised by the Ministry of Information and Culture at the State Secretariat in Birnin Kebbi.
He explained that an executive bill was already being drafted to provide the legal framework for the initiative.
Alhaji Hayatu Bawa also revealed that the State Executive Council had begun arrangements for the establishment of recreational centres across the state, alongside plans to develop a new Government Reserved Area (GRA) in Kawara, where about 3,000 plots are expected to be allocated.
Highlighting achievements recorded by his ministry, the commissioner said the present administration had expanded township roads, installed solar-powered street lights and carried out environmental sanitation measures, including evacuation and clearing of drainage channels to tackle recurring flooding in parts of the state.
He added that the government had refurbished KUDA trucks procured about two decades ago to improve sanitation services.
The commissioner further stated that the administration had constructed city gates and laid new roads in Birnin Kebbi and other towns across the state.
According to him, over N7.1 billion was spent on the installation of solar-powered street lights aimed at beautifying urban centres and improving security by reducing crime rates in communities.
Alhaji Hayatu Bawa explained that Birnin Kebbi was prioritised in many developmental projects because of its status as the state capital, maintaining that more than 90 per cent of Governor Nasir Idris’ campaign promises had already been fulfilled.
He also announced plans by the government to establish designated refuse dump sites across the state to improve waste management.
The commissioner called on residents to continue supporting the administration to enable it sustain ongoing development efforts.
Speaking earlier, the Commissioner for Information and Culture, Alhaji Yakubu Ahmed Birnin Kebbi, said the ministerial briefing was organised to keep the public informed about the achievements of the current administration since assuming office.
He noted that the Kauran Gwandu administration had recorded significant achievements over the past three years and commended media organisations for their continued support and cooperation.
