The Kebbi State Zakat and Sadaqat Board has called for stronger collaboration with the State House of Assembly to improve the welfare of vulnerable persons across the state.
The Chairman of the Board, Sheikh Umar Isah Mungadi, made the call while leading members of the Board’s management on a courtesy visit to the Kebbi State House of Assembly in Birnin Kebbi.
Sheikh Mungadi said collaboration with lawmakers would help strengthen the collection of zakat and sadaqat from wealthy individuals and business owners, noting that Kebbi State is currently lagging behind other states in contributions.
He disclosed that while Katsina State recorded over seven hundred million naira in zakat collections last year, Kebbi State recorded just over ninety million naira, which was distributed to more than five hundred vulnerable persons across the twenty-one local government areas.
The Board also proposed the inclusion of Waqaf in its official name to become the Kebbi State Zakat, Sadaqat and Waqaf Board, a move aimed at expanding sustainable support for the needy.
Responding, the Vice Chairman of the House Committee on Religious Affairs, Rt. Hon. Muhammad Garba Bena, assured the Board of the Assembly’s support and pledged to forward the request for legal amendment.
He also commended Governor Nasir Idris Kauran Gwandu for his commitment to religious activities, citing the establishment of the Ministry for Religious Affairs.
