NOA Urges Caution After Suspected Carbon Monoxide Death of Newlyweds in Gwandu

The National Orientation Agency (NOA), Kebbi State Directorate, has issued an urgent public safety advisory warning residents against operating generators, charcoal stoves, and other smoke-producing devices inside homes following the death of a newlywed couple in Gwandu Local Government Area from suspected carbon monoxide poisoning.

The Head of Department, Community Safety Awareness and Compliance of the Agency, Muhammed Musa Agah, who signed the statement, said the advisory was issued to prevent similar tragedies and urged residents to strictly observe safety precautions.

The NOA Director in Kebbi State, Mallam Muhammed Nasir Karofi, described carbon monoxide as a silent and deadly gas, warning that its invisible and odourless nature makes it difficult for victims to detect before it becomes fatal.

He stressed that generators, charcoal stoves, and firewood should never be used inside residential buildings or enclosed spaces, regardless of weather conditions or the need to protect equipment from rain.

The Agency advised households to always operate generators outdoors, far from doors, windows, and ventilation points, to prevent harmful fumes from entering living areas.

Residents were also urged to ensure proper ventilation in their homes, especially during cold or rainy periods when windows and doors are often kept closed.

The NOA further called on members of the public to educate their families, neighbours, and communities on the dangers of carbon monoxide poisoning, reaffirming its commitment to promoting public safety through continuous awareness campaigns across Kebbi State.
