The Zamfara State Government has directed the enforcement of the “No Work, No Pay” policy against nurses and midwives who have embarked on a six-day warning strike across the state.
An internal circular from the State Hospital Services Management Board instructed all Medical Directors, General Hospitals, and heads of health facilities to open daily attendance registers and submit weekly reports to the Office of the Executive Secretary for onward transmission to government.
The directive followed the commencement of industrial action by members of the National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives in the state, despite ongoing dialogue with a Joint Technical Team set up to review their demands, including the upward review of the Consolidated Health Salary Structure (CONHESS).
Union Chairman, Comrade Sani Shehu, told journalists in Gusau that the strike was to protest the government’s failure to implement CONHESS after approving the Consolidated Medical Salary Structure (CONMESS) for doctors in June.
He explained that the current action was a continuation of a seven-day warning strike declared earlier this month, which was suspended after one day following government intervention.
The nurses and midwives are now observing the remaining six days of the warning strike, which is expected to end on Tuesday. The union has threatened to embark on an indefinite strike if their grievances are not addressed.
