The senate has passed to second reading a bill for an Act to Repeal the Armed Forces Act and to Re-enact a Modern, Constitutionally Compliant and Operationally Responsive Legal Framework for the Armed Forces of Nigeria.
The passage came after the consideration of the lead debate on the bill by the sponsor senator Abdulaziz ‘Yaradu’a
Presenting the lead debate before the Senate plenary senator Abdulaziz ‘Yaradu’a said the Armed Forces of Nigeria remain the cornerstone of our sovereignty and national security,
He said they have stood gallantly in defense of the Nation’s territorial integrity , fight insurgency and terrorist activities
He argued that the existing Armed Forces Act, rooted in the 1960s military decree , therefore the bill seeks to provide a comprehensive reform to align the armed forces’ governance with constitutional principles of democratic accountability, and modern security demands.
