Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, Alhaji Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, has resigned from office with immediate effect, citing health-related reasons.
His resignation was conveyed in a letter dated December 1 and addressed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. In the letter, the former minister informed the President that he could no longer continue in the role due to his health condition.
Presidential spokesman, Bayo Onanuga, confirmed the development in a statement issued on Monday. According to him, President Tinubu has accepted Badaru’s resignation and expressed appreciation for his service to the nation.
The President is expected to communicate the name of a new defence minister to the Senate later this week.
Badaru Abubakar, 63, served as governor of Jigawa State for two terms between 2015 and 2023. He was appointed Minister of Defence on August 21, 2023, by President Tinubu.
His exit comes at a time the President has declared a national security emergency, with further details of the new security agenda expected to be announced soon.
