PDP Calls for Constitutional Review to Strengthen Governors’ Security Powers

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has called on the National Assembly to undertake a comprehensive review of Nigeria’s security laws, including constitutional amendments where necessary, to empower state governors to effectively discharge their responsibilities as Chief Security Officers of their states.

 

The National Chairman of the PDP, Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, SAN, made the call during a sympathy visit to Governor Nasir Idris over the recent abduction of schoolgirls from Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School, Maga, in Danko-Wasagu Local Government Area. The visit took place at the Government House, Birnin Kebbi.

 

Kabiru Tanimu Turaki SAN lamented the current structure where governors are regarded as Chief Security Officers in name, yet lack control over security agencies operating within their states. He described the situation as “lamentable” and urged lawmakers to address the gap to enhance security coordination nationwide.

 

The PDP Chairman emphasized the need for unity during moments of insecurity, stressing that kidnappers and criminal elements do not consider tribe, religion, or political affiliation before striking. “Times like this call for people to come together without regards to tribalism, religious and political party differences,” he said, urging communities to work collectively to protect themselves.

 

Tanimu Turaki commended Governor Idris for his courage and insistence on asking critical questions during the rescue operation, which he said contributed to the timely recovery of the abducted girls. He also congratulated the Kebbi State Government on the safe return of the students without any fatalities.

 

Responding on behalf of Governor Nasir Idris, Deputy Governor Senator Umar Abubakar Tafida expressed gratitude to the PDP delegation for the visit, describing it as evidence that national interest supersedes political divides. He thanked God for the successful rescue operation and offered prayers for the repose of the souls of the school’s Vice Principal and a civilian watchman who lost their lives.
