President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed the Minister of State for Defence, Alhaji Bello Matawalle, to immediately relocate to Kebbi State as part of intensified efforts to secure the release of 24 abducted schoolgirls.
The students of Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School, Maga, in Danko-Wasagu Local Government Area, were kidnapped by gunmen in the early hours of Monday.
According to a statement issued on Thursday by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Matawalle is to remain in Kebbi State to coordinate and oversee ongoing security operations aimed at rescuing the victims unharmed.
Matawalle, a former governor of Zamfara State, is expected to arrive in Birnin Kebbi on Friday. He is believed to bring valuable experience to the mission, having dealt with major banditry incidents and mass kidnappings during his tenure. One of the most notable was the abduction of 279 female students from Government Girls Science Secondary School, Jangebe, in February 2021, who were released days later.
President Tinubu, who postponed his planned trips to Johannesburg, South Africa, and Luanda, Angola, has been receiving continuous security briefings following the Kebbi schoolgirls’ abduction and the recent attack on worshippers at Christ Apostolic Church in Eruku, Kwara State.
Security agencies have already launched search-and-rescue operations, with federal authorities assuring parents and community members that every effort is being made to bring the girls back safely.
