A US citizen, Amir Amiry, has been released after spending nine months in detention under the Taliban in Afghanistan. His freedom followed negotiations led by Qatari mediators, officials confirmed on Sunday.
Amiry is the fifth American to be freed from Taliban custody this year. He is currently en route to the United States after first travelling to Doha.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio expressed gratitude to Qatar, praising its “tireless diplomatic efforts” in securing Amiry’s release. He described the detention as “wrongful” and stressed that more US citizens remain “unjustly held” in Afghanistan.
Qatar’s foreign ministry confirmed it had facilitated the release, adding that talks had been ongoing since March. According to CBS News, a breakthrough in negotiations came this past weekend.
Earlier this year, two US citizens were released in a prisoner exchange that saw the return of Khan Mohammad, a Taliban figure serving a life sentence in California on drug and terrorism charges. Another two Americans were freed in March, including George Glezmann, detained in 2022 while visiting Afghanistan as a tourist.
Qatari mediation also secured the recent release of a British couple, Peter and Barbie Reynolds, who had lived in Afghanistan for nearly twenty years.
The US government says it remains committed to bringing home all Americans still detained in the country.
