The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has dismissed as false and misleading an online report linking the cancellation of activities marking Nigeria’s 65th Independence Anniversary to an alleged attempted military coup.
In a statement signed by the Director of Defence Information, Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, the DHQ described the publication as “malicious and intended to cause unnecessary tension and distrust among the populace.”
According to the statement, the decision to cancel the anniversary parade was purely administrative and aimed at allowing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to attend a strategic bilateral meeting outside the country, while also enabling members of the Armed Forces to sustain the ongoing momentum in the fight against terrorism, insurgency, and banditry.
The DHQ further clarified that the recent arrest of sixteen officers currently under investigation was unrelated to any alleged coup plot, noting that the process was a routine internal disciplinary measure designed to uphold professionalism within the military.
“An investigative panel has been duly constituted, and its findings will be made public,” the statement added.
Brigadier General Gusau urged Nigerians to disregard the false report and continue to support security agencies in their efforts to maintain peace and stability.
He reaffirmed that the Armed Forces of Nigeria remains “firmly loyal to the Constitution and the Federal Government under the leadership of the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR.”
The DHQ also emphasized that the Federal Government, legislature, and judiciary are working closely to ensure the safety, development, and well-being of all Nigerians, stressing that “democracy is forever.”
