The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, says over three and a half million Nigerians have pre-registered online for voter cards within the first three weeks of its ongoing nationwide voter registration exercise.
A statement signed by INEC’s National Commissioner and Chairman of Information and Voter Education Committee, Sam Olumeku, revealed that as of Sunday, September 7th, a total of 3,544,850 citizens had completed online pre-registration since the process began on August 18th.
Of this number, 48 per cent are male while 52 per cent are female. Youths between the ages of 18 and 34 make up nearly 65 per cent of the applicants, with students accounting for about a quarter.
On completed registrations, which include both online and physical enrolments, the Commission recorded 288,614 as of September 4th. More than 74 per cent of these were youths, while close to 40 per cent were students.
The Commission thanked citizens and organisations mobilising civic participation but warned that only Nigerians aged 18 and above are eligible to register.
