Kebbi State Governor Dr. Nasir Idris, has assured the Christian community in the state of his administration’s commitment to addressing challenges affecting their welfare and religious activities.
The Governor gave the assurance at a special prayer session organized by the Kebbi State Government in collaboration with Christian community groups in Birnin Kebbi.
Governor Idris thanked the Christian community for its continued support and prayers for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, his administration and the Kebbi State Government.
He directed the Commissioner for Religious Affairs, Architect Aliyu, to establish a Christian Department in the Ministry, in response to a request by the Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, in the state.
The Governor also assured the Christian community that his administration would look into the challenges presented by the CAN leadership and find ways of addressing them.

As part of his support to the community, Governor Idris donated one hundred million naira to the Christian community in Kebbi State.
Earlier, the CAN Chairman in Kebbi State, Bishop Ayuba Kanta, commended Governor Nasir Idris for what he described as an inclusive administration that recognizes and accommodates people of different religious backgrounds.
Bishop Kanta said CAN remains apolitical, stressing that its members are free to belong to political parties of their choice.
He said the Christian community had continued to pray for Kebbi State, the Governor’s administration and Nigeria, in obedience to Scripture and respect for constituted authorities.

The CAN Chairman listed some challenges facing the Christian community to include the introduction of Christian Religious Studies in primary and secondary schools, extension of places of worship, creation of a Christian Directorate in the Ministry of Religious Affairs and financial support for the Christian Pilgrims Committee.
He also raised concerns over what he described as denial of approval for places of worship and demolition of some worship centres, particularly in Yauri Emirate.
Bishop Kanta, however, commended the state government for promoting religious harmony, empowering women, supporting the Christian community during festive periods and providing a Christian cemetery.
He noted that the administration has appointed a Special Adviser on Christian Religious Affairs and about thirty Senior Special Assistants from the Christian community.
He assured the Governor of the continued support and prayers of the Christian community.
In his remarks, the Commissioner for Religious Affairs, Architect Aliyu, appreciated the CAN leadership for its cooperation with the ministry.
He said the ministry had remained committed to resolving issues affecting religious communities in the state.
The Commissioner also addressed concerns over the activities of Hisbah in Zuru Emirate, saying the matter would be handled through sensitization.
He emphasized that Hisbah was not established to force or coerce anyone to convert to Islam, urging members of the public to remain calm and promote peaceful coexistence.
The prayer session was attended by government officials, Christian leaders and representatives of various Christian communities across Kebbi State.
